Video game hardware developer and publisher Microsoft has announced that the new royal pair, Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton, are set to arrive on the Xbox Live service in the form of Avatars, with the bride to be wearing the official dress.

For the last few weeks, those who have logged into the Xbox Live Gold account had the option to vote on which dress the avatar representing Kate would wear and, from the four possible dresses, close to 50,000 voters chose to have her wearing the more traditional one, all white and with a fairytale concept.

The winning dress got no less than 58 percent of the votes that were cast and a black tie dress came in second, with one modeled on the Scottish Highland tradition taking third, ahead of the look described as alternative cocktail.

The official announcement linked to the Kate and William arriving on Xbox Live makes it clear that the official Microsoft team has no actual knowledge of what kind of dress the bride will wear in the ceremony that is going to place later in the month, but they say that, “we still think they are the best dressed Avatars the LIVE community has ever seen, and Xbox wishes them the best of luck in their Royal Wedding.”

The royal wedding is an important event, with estimates saying that more than 1 billion people will watch it live or will actively look for news about it, and Microsoft is aiming to draw some of that attention to the Xbox 360 home gaming console.

As the home console battle intensifies, both Sony and Microsoft are trying to broaden the possible customer base for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 and this means working with audiences which are outside the traditional gaming space.

In the coming year, the Xbox 360 is set to get more television content and more family-based options.
