Earlier this year, Kentucky Fried Chicken announced it would be coming out with a sandwich that contained no bread, in what was labeled a revolutionary move on the part of the company. Made of two pieces of chicken with bacon, cheese and the Colonel’s Sauce, the new offer was initially meant to be a limited edition in both time and locations where it was served. The Double Down has proved such a hit with consumers that KFC has decided to give it an extension, much to the shock of nutritionists all over, eCanada Now reports.

Shortly after KFC made the announcement, health experts were up in arms as to how healthy such a sandwich was, especially in a context in which there seem to be few solutions to effectively tackle the problem of obesity. KFC, on the other hand, has always maintained that its new offering was healthy, packing comparatively less calories than other items on its menus – and even some salads, it emerged a short while later. Now, the company has people’s support to extend the availability of the Double Down.

“Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Double Down sandwich has become so much of a hit that the company plans on carrying the sandwich as part of their menu. It is being reported that the Double Down has been outselling all the other sandwiches that KFC offers. The Double Down is two chicken filets that have took the place of the bread. In between is two pieces of bacon, melted slices of monterrey and pepper jack cheese, and a zesty sauce. It seems that everyone is saying that the Double Down is the real deal,” eCanada Now reports.

“KFC has gone and said that the Double Down sandwich was so popular that people were eating them just as fast as they could make them. It was so popular it was just flying off of the shelves. KFC did make a bet and they assured that their new sandwich would be something that could be a trendsetter in the fast food industry. The Double Down can be in fried or grilled chicken varieties. It is being touted by several nutritionists who are saying that the chicken is better for you than the bread and beef that you usually get in a fast food burger. The Double Down looks to change all that and all indications are showing that it is,” the same report argues.

The Double Down breadless chicken-and-bacon-and-cheese sandwich (also called by many a media outlet any nutritionist’s nightmare) comes with 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1,380 milligrams of sodium. It’s by no means healthy but, as we also informed you a while back, there are at least ten salads available at other junk-food chains that are less healthy than this.
