Johnny Depp confirms engagement to Amber Heard, denies they’re only getting married because she’s pregnant

Johnny Depp is finally opening up on his surprise engagement to Amber Heard, his much younger co-star in “The Rum Diary.” If you know anything about Johnny, you know that he’s not the kind to gush about his personal life to the media but, no matter what they say, it turns out people can – and do – change.

These days, Depp is promoting a new film, the sci-fi “Transcendence” and, after half-confirming the engagement news in a press call in China a few days ago, he’s now doing the same for the media in the US.

In an appearance on The Today Show with Savannah Guthrie, Depp first tries to play it coy when asked about the engagement, saying the diamond ring he’s been wearing on his engagement finger is nothing but a “chick’s ring.”

Video of the exchange is embedded below, at the end of the article. The second video is of Johnny talking about his other passions, like music and drawing, and how amazing it was to perform with one of his longtime idols, Willie Nelson.

“She's a wonderful girl. She's sharp as a tack. A southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me,” Johnny says of Amber.

He offers Savannah a close look at his diamond ring, of which the tabloids say it was his first choice for an engagement ring for Amber but it didn’t fit her finger, so the actor simply had it replaced with a new one, with a much bigger stone.

Johnny also denies ongoing rumors that he’s marrying Amber because she’s pregnant with his child, saying something along the lines of “God now, what do you think I am, a savage?!,” which is quite an interesting comment if you consider that he and former partner Vanessa Paradis have two children together.

He stresses that the upcoming nuptials are “no shotgun affair,” as if a shotgun wedding would be the worst thing he could think of. Savannah picks up on that and, patting her baby bump, she laughs, “Not that this a bad thing!”

Guthrie was married just recently to her fiancé and they announced they were pregnant with their first child on their wedding day.

In the same interview, Depp talks about fame and how he’s yet to reconcile with it, how he hasn’t learned yet how to play the celebrity game and how his real “boss” is his loyal fanbase, the people who buy tickets to his movies and have supported him since day 1.
