Comedienne is promoting a new reality show, manages to offend again

Joan Rivers has done it again, offending people with her comments in an interview on The Today Show on NBC. As usual, she’s obstinately refusing to apologize, saying that, as far as she’s concerned, she did nothing wrong.

Below is a video with the offensive segment of the interview. Joan and her daughter were on The Today to promote their new reality series when, speaking of their living arrangements, Joan said that “those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.”

Her daughter was visibly shocked, as also was Al Roker, who hid his face in his hands as his fellow anchors whispered, “too soon.” As in, it’s too soon to make jokes about the Cleveland case that made lots of headlines last year, when Ariel Castro was found to have abducted and held hostage 3 women in his basement, whom he raped and abused for 10 straight years.

Their tales of what happened during a decade of captivity are horrifying, as also is the fact that Castro managed to keep them a secret for so long, without any of his neighbors even suspecting what he was doing.

Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, two of Castro’s three victims, have had their attorneys reach out to Rivers through the media, demanding an apology for her “hurtful” comment and obvious indifference to their traumatic circumstances.

As it happens, they’re barking up the wrong tree because, as Rivers sees it, since she’s done nothing wrong, she has no reason to apologize, TMZ reports.

Moreover, Rivers believes both women should “lighten up” and learn to appreciate a good joke. “One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They're ok. I bet you within 3 years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars,” she tells the celebrity e-zine in a brief statement.

The comedienne also takes it upon herself to remind Berry and DeJesus that many comedians’ repertoire includes jokes about Hitler or the sinking of the Titanic and, admittedly, those were far more tragic events than what happened to them. “The TV the guy gave them must not have had SNL,” Rivers says, as if excusing them for not knowing this.

In retrospect, Rivers’ joke about Lindsay Lohan’s miscarriage, which she made a couple of days ago while chatting with the paparazzi, doesn’t seem that offensive now, does it?
