The PlayStation Portable handheld from Sony has managed a great performance on the Japanese market, managing to outsell the newer Nintendo 3DS by almost 3 to 1, in a week when the video game chart was dominated by Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 – Professional.

The PSP saw quite a big jump in sales, managing to move 76,974 units during the week which ended on May 1, significantly more than the 49,162 posted during the previous week.

Meanwhile the Nintendo 3DS also saw an increase in its own numbers, but a much smaller one, from 23,038 devices sold to 28,413.

The domination of the PSP suggests that the honey moon period is over for the 3DS and that Nintendo needs to launch big name video games for buyers to be interested in the platform again.

Third place in the hardware chart went to the PlayStation 3 home gaming console from Sony, which managed to sell 23,954 units during seven days, an improvement on the 19,033 it had managed during the previous week.

The Wii is in fourth place, managing to get its sales numbers over the 10,000 units mark while the various DS versions have a grand total of 17,138 units sold during the week.

The Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2 have also managed to see an increase while the PSP Go reached a new low, selling just 251 units.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 - Professional from publisher Square Enix and for the Nintendo DS leads the video game chart, managing to sell 74,000 units after spending last week in second spot.

On its heels comes Final Promise Story from Image Epoch, created for the PSP, which sold 60,000 units during its first week on shelves.

The rest of the top ten includes El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron; Patapon 3; Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS; Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Wars Z: Hakai-hen; Pro Baseball Spirits 2011 for the PS3; Starry Sky: In Winter Portable and Monster Hunter Freedom 3.
