On Tuesday, Microsoft and Nokia announced the first application launched as a result of their partnership on the mobile space, namely the Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia devices. The new communications client was designed to connect directly with a company’s systems for streamlining mobile collaboration. The solution is already available for download from the Ovi Store, compatible with some of the Symbian-based Nokia Eseries smartphones.

Communicator Mobile enables users see the availability of their colleagues and to communicate with them via various methods, including instant messaging, texting, emailing, or via phone call. The handset's contact application embeds the names and status of colleagues, and users can update their presence, start or join instant messaging sessions, and more.

“Our alliance with Nokia aims to bring the Microsoft Office productivity experience to the millions of people using Nokia smartphones around the world,” said Kirt Debique, general manager, Microsoft Office Communications Platform & Solutions Group, Microsoft. “With the arrival of Communicator Mobile for Nokia today, we have a great start to fulfilling our joint vision.”

The new software solution has been released with support for the Nokia E72 and Nokia E52 handsets, and joins Nokia's efforts to offer its users direct access to e-mail and other personal information with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. The Communicator Mobile for Nokia is expected to be delivered to the market pre-installed on a series of Nokia smartphones, with plans to expand support for additional handsets in the near future, including the recently unveiled Nokia E5.

“This application really provides a much more efficient way to work with others, as you can see if someone is busy or available and the best way to start a conversation with them,” said Ukko Lappalainen, vice president at Nokia. “It also meets all of the requirements for the enterprise: cost-effective to implement, secure, familiar and reliable.”

Communicator Mobile is the first software solution released as a result of the alliance between Microsoft and Nokia. The partnership, announced back in August 2009, was the first of the kind for both companies. The duo focused on the development of this software solution ever since, and worked on improving other solutions as well.
