Infineon Technologies AG announced that its GPRS/UMTS multimedia platform
powers Panasonic's newest mobile handset, Softbank 705P, recently launched on the Japanese market. Infineon's scalable platform, the MP-EU (Multimedia Platform EDGE/UMTS) contains all the necessary hardware and software components of a mobile handset, enabling manufacturers to quickly introduce UMTS models based on the same core architecture, reducing design cycles and time-to-market.

"Infineon and Panasonic have a long track-record of successful cooperation and we are happy to expand our activities by bringing a common dual-mode 3G solution in the market." said Prof. Dr. Hermann Eul, member of the Infineon Management Board and President of the Infineon Communication Solutions Business Group. "With the proven MP-EU solution, Infineon has demonstrated its capability to deliver an attractive and competitive dual-mode platform, which also fulfils the special requirements of the Japanese market to its customers."

Infineon's MP-EU hardware reference design consists of the company's baseband, RF transceiver, power management and Bluetooth devices. The software platform includes GPRS/UMTS dual-mode protocol stacks that are complemented by the APOXI application and multimedia framework. All software modules are provided by Comneon, a subsidiary of Infineon Technologies AG.
