Granted, Google TV hasn't been much of a hit. It was met with a lot of enthusiasm when it was first announced, at last year's Google I/O conference, but the actual product didn't deliver on the promise of an enhanced TV experience.

Google has said in the past that it knows when to give up and it's not afraid of failure, Google Wave being the perfect example of this.

But it doesn't intend to do the same with Google TV, while the initial reception and sales have been low, Google pulled back and regrouped.

It asked manufactures to dial down their efforts as well, while Google worked on an updated software version that would, hopefully, fix all that's wrong with Google TV.

This isn't anything new, Google did this several months ago. While it was initially thought that the update would be ready in a few months, it's taking Google quite a lot longer.

But the wait is almost over to some degree, Google plans to unveil its upgraded TV platform, or at least offer a sneak preview at next week's Google I/O, as a new set of rumors confirms earlier ones.

The major focus is expected to be support for applications and the Android Marketplace.

There's just one caveat, while there will definitely be something related to Google TV next week, the actual product is still some months off, so the first devices with the new and improved Google TV won't be hitting stores soon.

In fact, the target is to have something done in time for this year's holiday sales, quite a few months from now. But the new hardware will be better, it will use faster chips for one.

Of course, this being Google, the real focus is on the software and existing users will be able to upgrade as well, leaving early adopters with the hope that their devices will become a lot better, eventually.
