Huawei rumored to be developing a home-grown OS

Huawei is preparing a new smartphone which is expected to make a debut as the Honor 7. The device maker might also introduce the high-end Honor 7 Plus during the same event, but this piece of information has yet to be confirmed.

Anyway, last month, a report came in to reveal that Huawei might be looking to lessen its dependence on third-party partners, by developing its own mobile operating system, dubbed Kirin OS. Now a new tidbit coming out of Gizmo China reveals an interesting fact: it seems that the Honor 7 Plus could be the first smartphone to be launched with Huawei’s own mobile platform on board.

Reducing dependence on Google’s Android has become a very hot topic as of late. Custom ROM maker Cyanogen famously declared it was working towards building a version of Android that is no longer reliant on Google.

Kirin OS might become reality this month

Anyway, a leaked screenshot shows Huawei’s Kirin 1.0 running on a device that the source claims is the Honor 7 flagship. Apparently, the Chinese device maker has been working on its own mobile operating system for the past three years in its development labs.

And it will be quite interesting to see what Kirin OS brings to the table, in comparison to competitors like CyanogenMod and OxygenOS.

Still, Huawei hasn’t revealed anything about its home-grown OS, so for the time being, we should try and take the information with a grain of salt.

Purported Huawei Honor 7 specs

The Honor 7 handset has leaked consistently in the last few weeks, as a 5-inch screened device with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution.

The phone will supposedly be powered by a Hi-Silicone Kirin 935 SoC fitted with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Honor 7 Plus should upgrade things to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage (some rumors claim 128GB of storage instead).

In addition, both versions will pack 13MP rear cameras with autofocus, LED flash, OIS (optical image stabilization) and video recording.

Huawei is going to use a 3,280 mAh battery to pump power into the phones, which will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop with Emotion 3.0 UI on top.

The Huawei Honor 7 might be unveiled on June 24 and will end up going into retail with a $322 / €283 price tag.
