Australian mobile phone carrier Telstra has just announced that its HTC Wildfire customers can now download and install a new operating system flavor on their device, namely Android 2.2 Froyo.

The new software update is being delivered to all Wildfire users over the air, the wireless carrier announced, adding that users should download it over a WiFi connection, given the fact that it is 56.88MB large.

The new platform release comes with a nice range of features over the previous release, as well as with enhanced performance, improvements, fixes, and more.

Some of the main features included with the new release would be: - A portable Wi-Fi hotspot mode where you can share HTC Wildfire’s mobile broadband connection with Wi-Fi enabled devices in close proximity. - A bigger text box to make composing SMS messages easier. - The ability to store apps on external memory. - New setting options including being able to independently change ringtone, media and alarm volume.

In order to update their devices, users would have to go to Settings>About Phone>System software updates>Check now to see whether it is available for them or not.

As stated above, the new software will be delivered to all users wirelessly, which means that they won't need to connect their devices to a desktop PC to perform the update.

“Because it is a large update (56.88MB), we strongly recommend using a home Wi-Fi connection,” the wireless carrier announced.

“Mobile Data charges will apply if the software package is downloaded via the Next G mobile network. If you download via a mobile connection while you are on international roaming then international data charges will apply and this is not recommended.”

Moreover, the company notes that, before proceeding with the update, users should make sure that they have 59MB free on the phone’s internal memory. This can be checked through going to Settings>SD & Phone storage. The new software update should leave the files on the mobile phone intact.
