Wireless carrier AT&T has just made available for purchase on its airwaves a new smartphone running under Google's Android operating system, namely the HTC Status.

Launched around the world as the HTC ChaCha, the new mobile phone landed in Canada as well under the name of Status, and can be purchased now in the US via both AT&T and partner retailers.

The wireless carrier made the HTC Status available with a price tag of only $49.99 attached to it with the signing of a contract agreement.

Those who would like to purchase the device free of contract would have to get $399.99 out of their pockets, the carrier notes.

The new device arrives on shelves with a 2.8-inch touchscreen display complemented by a physical QWERTY keyboard, making it a great option for heavy texters.

Moreover, it comes with a dedicated Facebook button, so that users could share content on the social networking site with ease.

Whether it comes to updating the status on Facebook or to posting links, videos or photos on the social networking site, the said button can always help.

The smartphone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and sports the HTC Sense UI on top.

It packs an 800MHz application processor inside, along with a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with auto focus and LED flash. HTC included support for 3G networks inside the new smartphone, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a built-in GPS receiver.

Moreover, the HTC Status comes with up to 512 MB of internal memory (only 120MB user accessible), and with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

The mobile phone is powered by a 1250 mAh battery that can deliver up to 6.5 hours of talk time, or up to 26.6 days of standby time.

The HTC Status can be seen on AT&T's website here, or at Best Buy here.
