The latest Android-based flagship device from HTC, the Sensation, which was known before as the HTC Pyramid, is now official and awaiting its landing on shelves, which should happen sometime in May.

The new device was officially introduced on Tuesday, during a special event in London, and is expected to become available for purchase via Vodafone at first, in various European markets.

When released, the new handset should prove one of the most appealing Android smartphones on shelves, and also one of the most powerful such devices.

The handset sports a 1.2 GHz dual core application processor inside, complemented by 768 MB of RAM, and 1 GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of external storage space.

It comes with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, boasting a qHD (540 X 960) resolution, and runs under Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

The mobile phone should arrive on shelves with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with auto focus, dual LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording capabilities, complemented by a VGA fixed focus color camera on the front, for video calling.

The new device comes to the market with support for 14.4 Mbps download speeds on 3G networks, complemented by 5.76 Mbps upload speeds. It was packed with support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and Europe/Asia/T-Mobile US: 900/AWS/2100 MHz frequencies.

The specifications list of the new device would also include Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, as well as Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, micro-USB 2.0 (5-pin) port with mobile high-definition video link (MHL) for USB or HDMI connection, a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack, and built-in GPS receiver.

The HTC Sensation also comes with USB and Wi-Fi tethering, DLNA for wirelessly streaming media from the phone to your TV or computer, as well as with Gyro sensor, G-Sensor, Digital compass, Proximity sensor and Ambient light sensor, and with FM Radio.

The new device also comes with great multimedia features, including support for 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3) file formats, as well as with Flash Player 10.2 support.

The phone sports HTC's new Sense UI, with Facebook and Twitter integration, the possibility to easily share photos or videos on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, or YouTube, and with access to various Google Mobile Services and to applications available for download via the Android Market.

The new device comes to the market with a 1520 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can offer up to 400 minutes of talk time on 3G, or up to 400 hours of standby time. The phone measures 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3mm (4.96 x 2.57 x 0.44") and weighs in at 148 grams (5.22 ounces) with battery.
