HTC HD2 Will See Official Windows Mobile 7 Upgrade

In early October, Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC officially announced the launch of HTC HD2, a high-end device that comes to the market with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. The handset sports a powerful Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor, as well as a large touchscreen display, poised to make it one of the most wanted Windows phones on the market.

However, Microsoft is known already to be working on a future release of the mobile operating system, namely Windows Mobile 7, which is set to arrive on the market in late 2010, and it seems that the HTC HD2 will also see an official upgrade to the OS flavor. “HTC will announce availability of Windows Mobile 7 upgrade for HTC HD2 as soon as Microsoft will officially announce Windows Mobile 7,” a recent post on msmobiles states (via htcpedia).

Those of you who might have followed the development of Windows Mobile 6.5 and of the supposedly future versions of the OS, should know already that a variety of leaked builds and cooked ROMs for existing Windows Mobile-based devices emerged into the wild. However, it seems that this won't be the case with HTC HD2, for it will see the software update from its maker itself, just as the HTC Touch Pro2 or HTC Touch Diamond2 saw their official Windows Mobile 6.5 ROMs (both were launched with WM 6.1 on board, earlier this year).

Of course, some enthusiasts were already hopping for HTC HD2 to be updated to Windows Mobile 7 and this rumor is set to eliminate any doubt they might have had. Even so, for the time being nothing is yet official, so one might consider taking this with a grain of salt. Windows Mobile 7 is expected to be officially announced in about 5 months from now on, and there are great chances that more details on the handsets that are eligible for an upgrade will emerge at that time. Watch this space for further updates.

When I heard news stories of the HTC HD2 pink aura defect, which puts a pink dot on your photos, I wondered if the phone may be withdrawn until the problem is fixed. I don't know what might happen. Maybe there'll be a refund.

I wonder if WinMo 7 will fix the pink aura problem.

I've owned a HD2 for a couple of weeks now and never really had a big problem with the pink spot effect on the camera. it seemed to me that the people experiencing this were not giving the camera time to adjust to different light conditions before snapping thier shots. I've always found the image quality to be of a very high standard but even so HTC have released an update on thier support site that definately addressed any colour balancing issues. I'd recommend anyone thinking about diving into the world of the HD2 to take the plunge as i KNOW you wont regret it. Absolutely ALL negative accounts I've read about the phone in various posts and reviews can easily be accounted for by a lack of understanding of the technology my only criticism then would be that the quick reference manual that you get with the phone doesn't do a great job of explaining the functions to the new user.

Step 1: Get the HTC HD2

Step 2: Download the PDF manual from HTC and upload it to the documents folder on the phone (it works just like your PC). You can now read the full manual on the move using the PDF reader you get on the phone.

Step 3: Gloat Gloat and Gloat some more with the knowledge you own THE most powerful mobile phone/pocket pc of this form factor money can buy, and yes that includes the iphone

WnMo 7 is a STEP BACKWARD from WinMo 6.5. A step forward for HTC HD2 WinMo 6.5 would be to an Android os.

i had the htc hd2 for a couple of weeks and agree the phone is amazing no question. i sent it back because of poor signal issues and found wm6.5 and sense u on top was a pain to use the fact they open 2 different ways a real headache, that said did not realise there may be free upgrade to wm7, maybe should of kept it. that said if htc had just put windows or andriod on hd2 think i would have had perfect phone, now i am left with my old n95 8gb (sill superb)and dont know if i like iphone enough to get one or wait to see 2010 line up for htc , bravo maybe...

11 Feb 2010 - I have had the HTC HD2 on voda for a few days now and am getting very frustrated with clunky windows interface. A great example if windows media player, it's developed to be used with a stylus and with the HD2 being touch only it's unworkable.

I've noticed also that the handset will appear to be on - but in fact it's in a coma state and needs the battery off to bring it back to life.

I strongly suspect that the HD2 will be fantastic with Windows 7 but I'm not prepared to wait several months with frustrations.

I have been trawling the web trying to get a straight answer to the question "Will the HTC HD2 be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 7?"

Does anyone have a deifnitive Yes/No answer please?

By the way, I popped into the local Phones4U shop and two of the three people there hadn't even heard of Windows Mobile 7! One of them told me that "Windows 7 is an Operating System for PCs and won't work on a phone!"

I didn't have the heart to tell him that I've been an I.T. Analyst for over 20 years, but when I politley pointed out the fact that I'd said Windows Mobile 7 his reply... "Never heard of it, they only work with 6.5" *sigh*

James... you may want to try to update the phone to the latest firmware first before you write it off as being unstable and freezing.. that is why the updates are released.. to address issues like these...

I have to say that I am perfectly happy with the unit considering it is made by humans for humans.. we are not perfect nor are the things we make... My HTC HD2 is running excellent..

Having read about all of the things that Windows Mobile 7, (or whatever it's now called) will lose, (multi tasking, copy & paste, etc) I'm happier staying with Windows Mobile 6.5
