The development team at ArenaNet is introducing a new Halloween-themed event for their MMO Guild Wars 2, which is designed to introduce the Mad King to those who are engaged with the title.

The event is set to take place until October 31, the day of the real-world Halloween and will consist of four separate acts, each of them introducing new dungeons for players to explore, bonus achievements to earn and a new game mode for the Player versus Player area of the game called Costume Brawl.

The official description of the event states: “500 years ago, a tyrannical Krytan king was slain by his own people, those who had suffered greatly during his reign of lunacy. It is said that this king’s body was chopped into pieces, and his spirit was banished to the Underworld, but that he can return to the mortal realm for just one day a year: on Halloween.”

The developer says that in the game world, 250 years have passed since the Mad King was seen and with Halloween just around the corner, a number of strange events suggest that he might be manifesting again.

The new game update also introduces paid tournaments to Guild Wars 2, battles that include 5 players on each side and will ask all those interested to pay an entry fee in order to get currency rewards based on their performance.

Guild Wars 2 is an interesting entry in the MMO genre because it asks players to pay for the initial game, but then allows them to play for as long as they want without paying a monthly subscription.

The development team at ArenaNet will get revenue by introducing regular content expansion and by using the in-game store, which accepts real-world money.

The game has sold more than 2 million units since launch.
