Actor Jeff Conaway died in hospital hours ago, after falling into a coma and never waking up from it. It is believed he OD-ed on prescription pills some weeks back, which eventually led to his death. Conaway was 60 years old.

As we also informed you some time ago, word online had it that Conaway, whose substance abuse was no secret, had relapsed and was again hooked on prescription meds.

Some weeks ago, he was found unconscious in his home and was rushed immediately to the hospital. Later on, he slipped into a coma, as his rep confirmed at the time.

TMZ has now confirmation from the actor’s family that Conaway has passed. He never woke up again.

“‘Grease’ star Jeff Conaway has died today, several weeks after he was found unconscious in his LA area home, TMZ has confirmed with the actor’s family,” the report says.

“Conaway – a notorious substance abuser – had reportedly fallen into a coma after suffering an overdose earlier this month, and doctors were not able to revive him,” TMZ adds.

After being the hottest man on the scene for some years, Conaway’s career came to a halt and the offers stopped coming in as he sank deeper and deeper into depression and drug use.

In 2008, he was again making headlines as he agreed to appear on Celebrity Rehab to deal with his demons and learn to keep his addiction in control.

He relapsed shortly after.

In a statement issued to TMZ, John Travolta, who starred with Conaway in the iconic “Grease,” the actor says that Jeff, despite his prolonged substance abuse, was a “wonderful and decent man and we will miss him.”

“My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time,” Travolta adds.

As we speak, several US media outlets covering Jeff’s death refer to him as Hollywood’s most painful cautionary tale of recent years.
