Gran Turismo 5 will be on the receiving end of many new updates and downloadable content, at least according to its main designer, Kazunori Yamauchi, who declared that new things will be added to the already impressive racing game.

Gran Turismo 5 has over 1,000 cars in its roster, but only around 200 of them are actually high quality, "Premium" ones, while the rest were imported from previous Gran Turismo games, and that shows through the lowered details they have in the game.

The proportion is set to change, however, as Yamauchi revealed to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that some standard cars will be getting the premium treatment.

This means their polygon count will go up, they will receive a cockpit view as well as increased details and shadows.

The Polyphony Digital designer didn't say anything else about this overhaul project, but expect some cars to be upgraded in the near future and released as downloadable content.

Until then, Yamauchi stated that several region-specific updates are going to be released for Gran Turismo 5.

North American players will be able to enlist in the GT Academy, which will see the best of them compete in real life events and win big prizes.

European players will also have their own special online tournament, the SLS Challenge, which could net one lucky and talented Gran Turismo 5 player a real life Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar.

In the end of his interview, Yamauchi stated that his Polyphony Digital team was still busy with implementing new features in Gran Turismo 5 and fixing user complaints, so new cars or tracks are still a long way from being launched as DLC.

Gran Turismo 5 was already updated quite a few times since its release on November 24, with systems like the damage or online multiplayer ones being enhanced by the Polyphony Digital team.
