In a rather interesting turn of events, Warner Bros. and developer Monolith Productions have confirmed that their recently released Gotham City Impostors multiplayer shooter is now completely free to play on the PC platform, via Steam.

Gotham City Impostors came out at the beginning of the year and offered an outlandish multiplayer-only experience that placed players in the shoes of either "Batz" or "Jokerz" and tasked them with fighting one another around the fictional comic book city.

Now, after plenty of free and paid DLC appeared for the game, developer Monolith and publisher Warner Bros. have confirmed that it's a free-to-play experience, at least on the PC platform, via the Steam digital distribution service.

"The Bats and Jokerz are running free! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the PC version of Gotham City Impostors is now Free To Play. The latest version of the game is now available for download at no cost via Steam and is Steamworks enabled," the publisher said.

"Those who download the Gotham City Impostors Free To Play via the Steam client will have access to the original game, as well as all DLC packs, which includes new maps, weapons, mascots and more. Players will also experience join-in-progress matchmaking that ensures gamers are placed into populated matches."

The game will extract its profits from downloadable content, as already 33 separate add-ons are available for purchase via Steam.

Unfortunately, it seems that those who bought the game earlier this year or who had already purchased various DLC packs won't be getting anything special in compensation for this sudden shift into the free-to-play genre, as neither Warner Bros. nor Monolith has revealed anything about their previous customers.

Until something official is revealed, the game is now available as a free download via Steam for the PC platform.
