Word online has it British comedian joked about Foster's orientation in opening monologue

At last night's Golden Globes 2012, held and aired live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, host Ricky Gervais managed to be both funny and somewhat controversy-free – except for a joke he made about Jodie Foster, word online has it.

As we also noted a short while ago, Gervais tried to steer clear from all controversial topics in his opening speech, sticking instead to jokes about celebrities deemed “fair game,” especially in the blogosphere and the tabloids, like Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.

However, at one point, as he was reading a list of rules the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC had handed out to him before the awards (video below), he made a jab at Jodie Foster.

“And I'm not to libel anyone. And I must not mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films, and especially not Jodie Foster's Beaver,” he said, pretending to read from a piece of paper he had taken out of his pocket.

“I haven't seen it myself. I spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven't seen it either. That doesn't mean it's not any good,” he added.

While the joke starts off with a mention of Foster's film called “Beaver,” it's clear that, by the end of it, Gervais seems to be talking about something else entirely.

TMZ, for instance, suggests that he's actually joking about her orientation (no man has seen it), the one issue the star has never agreed to talk about with the public.

Either way, even if he was, Jodie didn't mind. As he cracked the joke, the camera zoomed in on her – and she seemed to be having a good time, even making gestures to show him that she appreciated his raunchy sense of humor.

Because of the events at the Golden Globes 2011, Gervais couldn't obviously make his opening speech without mentioning Johnny Depp, the only star of whom he said he was sorry to have offended with his crude humor.

“This time last year, our first presenter was the biggest movie star on the planet. I insulted his film The Tourist, causing his career to plummet so far that he was forced to work with me on my new show, Life's Too Short, which premieres on HBO on Feb. 19. Please welcome the man who will wear literally anything Tim Burton tells him to, Johnny Depp,” Gervais said with a huge grin.

All in good fun, of course.
