Publisher Paradox Interactive has offered more information on their alternate history online game Gettysburg: Armored Warfare, which will use the free-to-play model to allow gamers to engage in 32 versus 32 players battles that will mix real-time strategy and first-person shooter mechanics.

The concept of the game says that time travelers from 2060 return to the Civil War period and the crucial Gettysburg battle in order to change the course of history, and players need to use technology like tanks, heavy weapons and armored blimps in order to defeat their enemies on the iconic battlefield.

There are 4 maps included in the game, each covering an area of more than 80 square kilometers and there will more than 1,000 units on the map at times, with up to 32 gamers on each side controlling them.

There are 10 units types and each of them has versions for the Union and Confederate sides, with modifications and upgrades that can be applied as they earn experience.

The developers at Radioactive Software are saying that there will be three game modes included, one of them called “Only 1860s,” which suggests that history lovers will be able to engage in battles that stay close to the historical flow.

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare will use Paradox Connect to deliver stat tracking and a persistent upgrade path for players and their in-game avatars.

Tom Söderlund, who is the project leader for Paradox Connect, has stated, “History is a great setting for any game as it adds familiarity and an understanding of the motivations behind the opposing forces.“

He added, “Throw in tanks from 200 years in the future as well as other modern weapons and you have a really interesting twist on history. That’s what we’re bringing with Gettysburg: Armored Warfare when it launches later this year.”

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare will be released in 2011.
