Can this new take on the old shooter breathe fresh life into the series?

For many gamers Wolfenstein, alongside fellow classic shooters like Doom 3D, laid the ground-work for their love of the genre. After a few not-so-popular attempts at bringing the game back into the spotlight, Bethesda and id Software charged MachineGames with creating a new take on the old series.

The result is Wolfenstein: The New Order, a brand new entry in the series that, even if it stars the classic protagonist – B.J. Blazkowicz – bears a brand new premise with an alternate history in which Nazi Germany won World War II and enslaved Europe and the world, paving the world for some grisly research.

The demo showed by Bethesda behind closed doors at Gamescom 2013 starts with B.J. accompanying a squad of allied soldiers on a special mission to assassinate a fearsome Nazi general called Deathshead.

As you can imagine, infiltrating a huge German castle and finding the reputed general is no easy thing, as B.J. needs to climb up and then go back down through the many rooms in order to open the door for the rest of his squad.

Fortunately, his trip is quite impressive, thanks to the pretty great shooter mechanics. What's more, if the protagonist finds two models of the same gun, he can dual wield them, even powerful rifles. Sadly, the shooting feels a bit off, as targeting can be a hit hard and, when coupled with the tough difficulty even on lower settings, you'll die quite a few times before getting the hang of the experience.

While previous Wolfenstein games didn't take themselves too seriously in terms of story, The New Order places a big emphasis on its plot and the different things B.J. went through.

Needless to say the plot to assassinate the Nazi general fails and the hero finds himself recuperating in a Polish asylum, after suffering some terrible injuries.

After an attempt to destroy the hospital, B.J. springs back into action and a really cathartic revenge sequence follows that once again shows his proficiency at killing Nazi soldiers.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is out for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
