Games developer and publisher Fishlabs has announced the sequel to its acclaimed Galaxy on Fire space shooter game. The new outer space epic Galaxy on Fire 2 brings a new taste to the saga by introducing a rich story and RPG-like gameplay.

It took Fishlabs more than a year of development to release Galaxy on Fire 2, but dog-fighting games fans will be disappointed, as the sequel is closer to the space adventure genre.

Still, if you're an avid RPG gamer you'll be able to enjoy over 10 hours of outer space adventure, in which you will be able to explore a complete galaxy, with more than 20 solar systems, 100 different 3D space stations, over 30 upgradeable spaceships, as well as countless exciting freelance missions and a complex trading simulation.

The epic story behind the game unravels as you advance in the game, by taking the role of mercenary Keith T. Maxwell, the same hero that appeared in the first incarnation of the series.

Catapulted 35 years ahead in time by a malfunction of your spaceship's hyperdrive, you find yourself in a completely different galaxy.

An aggressive alien race, the Voids have invaded known space using wormhole technology and threaten the humanity.

Besides the main plot, players will be able to carry out a wide range of side missions, or just go on raids.

You'll be able to sell all the loot you get in the various missions, in order to outfit your ship with better weapons and custom equipment.

“We spent a lot of time working on Galaxy on Fire 2 so that we could offer the over two million fans of the first part and those who will become fans a truly unique console-style gaming experience on the iPhone,” says Michael Schade, CEO of Fishlabs Entertainment.

“We are sure that Galaxy on Fire 2 will not only be the new benchmark in the science fiction genre, but is also a game that many iPhone players have been waiting for.”

Galaxy on Fire 2 is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices and requires iOS 3.0 or later, as well as 108MB of storage space.

The game is now available on the App Store at an introductory price of $6.99, but in a few weeks, after the iPad version is launched as a free update with extra high-resolution textures and special controls, the price will be raised to $9.99.

As a side note, Galaxy on Fire 2 has been optimised for the iPhone 4 and its Retina display.
