Galaxy Nexus, the latest Google phone out there and the first handset in the world to arrive on shelves with the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, is now available for purchase on the UK market.

The smartphone, announced to the world last month, was supposed to make an appearance on shelves in the country via both wireless carriers and through retailers, but it seems that only one company has it available for users, namely Phones4u.

At 8AM local time, the retailer opened some of its stores to allow users to start buying the new device.

The retailer also has the new Google phone listed on its website, but it did not shed the “coming soon” tag as of yet.

However, it should not be too long before the new device becomes available for purchase for UK mobile phone users via more channels.

Recently, wireless carrier Three UK announced that it will kick off sales of Galaxy Nexus only next week, and online retailer Clove made a similar move.

However, other carriers that were expected to start selling the new smartphone today, including O2 or Vodafone, did not make a similar move, and chances are that they too will kick off sales of the new device in a few hours.

The new Galaxy Nexus is the most advanced Google phone launched to date. He handset sports a slim, curved design, and packs a large, 4.65-inch touchscreen display.

Manufactured by Samsung, the new smartphone is powered by a 1.2GHz application processor, sports 32GB of internal memory, and a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording capabilities.

It also arrives on shelves with a front camera for video calling, as well as with enhanced connectivity capabilities, including support for NFC, and more.

Those who would like to learn some more info on the offers Phones4u put in place for the new device should head over to the retailer's website here.
