Samsung's new GALAXY Tab Android-based tablet PC comes to the market with Atmel maXTouch solution powering its touchscreen display, Atmel Corporation, a leader in microcontroller and touch solutions, announced today.

The new tablet PC comes to the market with Google's Android 2.2 operating system on board, and is capable of offering its users various high-end features including mobile email, voice and video calling, PC-like web-browsing, and powerful multimedia features.

Moreover, the slate offers fast access to the Android Market, where users can find a great deal of applications available for download.

The new device is powered by a 1-GHz processor, while its 7-inch capacitive touchscreen is powered by Atmel maXTouch technology, both packed inside a slim, lightweight profile.

“The Samsung GALAXY Tab is being sold by mobile operator Vodafone Group PLC in many European markets and is expected to be offered by Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T in the US over the next few months,” the company notes.

The Atmel maXTouch solution present on GALXY Tab offers higher performance, better accuracy, faster response times and lower power usage when compared to rival solutions, being able to offer enhanced user experiences.

maXTouch uses Atmel's proprietary microcontroller technology, which is complemented by software algorithms to offer an even more robust touch solution.

“Its true unlimited touch functionality and faster performance enable advanced features including rejection of unintended touches, multi-touch stretch/pinch and rotate gestures, and handwriting recognition on larger form factor screens, ranging from mobile Internet devices (MIDs) to PC Netbooks and notebooks,” the company announced.

Mr. Dongsub Kim, Principal Engineer and Team Leader at HW Platform R&D Group of Samsung Electronics Mobile Device Division says that the Atmel maXTouch solution was selected due to its better performance levels delivered in comparison with what competitors can offer.

“After selecting maXTouch solutions for our smaller screen devices, we knew it would be the right choice for Samsung GALAXY Tab. Atmel maXTouch will empower GALAXY Tab users with unlimited touch capabilities and longer battery life, for an overall better experience,” he continued.

“As the de facto standard in high-end smartphones, Atmel maXTouch solutions will now power the Samsung GALAXY Tab, which is the first of many tablets to use this solution,” said Jon Kiachian, Senior Director of Touch Marketing, Atmel Corporation.
