Samsung GALAXY S II, the latest flagship Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based mobile phone from the South Korean handset vendor, was sold in over 3 million units during its first 55 days of availability.

The Android-based device is already available in various markets around the world, and is expected to arrive in even more of them in the not-too-distant future, including the United States.

With 3 million units already sold on the global market, the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone becomes the fastest selling Android phone.

Packing a dual-core application processor inside, with each core clocked in at 1.2GHz, the smartphone can deliver impressive performance levels, making it one of the most appealing handsets at the high-end of the market.

“Announced at Mobile World Congress 2011, the GALAXY S II represents our most advanced smartphone to date and demonstrates Samsung‘s commitment to deliver premium, market-defining devices,” JK Shin, president and head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, commented.

“This milestone reflects the continued strong support from our carrier partners around the world who have chosen the GALAXY S II as their flagship Android device.”

Samsung GALAXY S II comes with large 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display for a great viewing experience while on the go, and sports a thin (8.49mm) design.

On the back, the handset sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for HD video recording, and features a front-facing camera to enable video calling.

It sports 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

Not to mention that Samsung packed it with HSPA+, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, as well as with built-in GPS receiver, and other capabilities as well.

“The next generation smartphone also includes exclusive access to Samsung’s four new content and entertainment hubs, seamlessly integrated to provide instant access to music, games, e-reading and social networking services,” Samsung notes.
