Fring has launched a new feature in their iOS application called Playgrounds. The update puts a social spin on the app by enabling anyone to participate in Group Video discussions about subjects that matter to them.

Playgrounds lets Fring users actively engage in four-way video discussions.

They can do so either by browsing a list of open Playgrounds or by creating their own, and any one can jump in, regardless of their device model or brand (so long as users stay in the confines of the iOS-Android ecosystem).

“Since launching the worlds 1st Video chat service in November 2009, fring has pushed video chat from a personal communication tool among friends to a more dynamic and social video experience,” says the developer.

According to the makers of the app, “fring’s Playgrounds adds a new subject-centric approach to Group Video chat, giving users the opportunity to take their passions and engage in live, real-time discussions via video chat.”

Commenting on their new update, Avi Shechter, CEO and Co-founder of fring, added: “Playground Video chat empowers users to video & voice their opinions about things that matter to them. We let users do more than simply ‘follow’ their interests. Now they can actively engage with others via video chat, instead of waiting for character-constrained updates.”

Of course, existing Fring users can continue to enjoy free Group Video chat with their friends outside the new Playgrounds feature.

They can do two-way video, voice calls and text chat, in addition to engaging in public Playgrounds.

In version 5.3.2.36, Fring users also get push notifications and subscription calling plans - “Unlimited worldwide calling to regular phones in 40 countries for $7/month (via iTunes account). Another way to cut your phone mobile phone bill,” says the developer.

As usual, Fring to Fring calls are free.
