Dan Scanlan, also known as "Cool Hand Uke", is a ukulele performer and teacher who also has his way with a Mac. The artist decided he would roll out some free ukulele iPhone ringtones for everyone who owns either model of the Apple handset. Ringtones can be installed easily using iTunes.

The Ukulele is a chordophone classified as a plucked lute. As a subset of the guitar family of instruments, it generally sports four strings or four courses of strings. The ukulele is commonly associated with music from Hawaii, where the name roughly translates as "jumping flea". However, the name is also said to mean "the gift that came here", from the Hawaiian words "uku" (gift or reward) and "lele" (to come), according to Queen Lili'uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch.

The instrument isn't a mystery for those who like it, and since only those who like it would download ukulele-based iPhone ringtones, some of the available songs (highlights) from Cool Hand Uke include Ain't She Sweet, Bye Bye Blues, Give Peace a Chance, the Stardust Intro, There's No Place Like Hawaii, These Boot Are Made for Walkin' and dozens more.

After downloading the tones from this page, users should take extra care not to delete the ".m4r' suffix", as Cool Hand Uke puts it, while the ringtones are easily installed using iTunes. Needless to point out, the ringtones can be distributed freely, but not sold.

All ringtones are both performed and recorded by Dan Scanlan (Cool Hand Uke) using GarageBand on 17-inch MacBookPro. The artist is accepting donations, via PayPal, if you would like to show your appreciation for his work.

Cool Hand Uke is also featured on the iTunes Store with one of his albums entitled "iUke in the Fall". The name of the album might spell bad news for Apple, should the company have planned to invent an electronic ukulele in the meanwhile - Steve Jobs wouldn't go with anything except an "i" before the Uke dubbing.
