Sony and THQ have confirmed that, while while owners of the PlayStation 3 edition of Saints Row 3: The Third might not get an extra gameplay mode, as we learned yesterday, they will, in fact, get a free copy of the previous Saints Row 2.

Saints Row 3 was just released in North America and, while it most certainly delivered on the wild antics it promised through an array of videos, trailers and screenshots, PlayStation 3 owners found that the gameplay mode promised back at E3 2011, in which they could engage in combat using outlandish weapons, wasn't present.

Now, in an effort to please games, THQ and Sony have confirmed that Saints Row 3 owners who redeem the game's Online Pass will get a free digital copy of Saints Row 2, the previous game in the open world series.

"Go back to a simpler time, when the Saints were vying for control of Stilwater, before they were global icons, a household name, and a criminal empire," the companies revealed. "Before Professor Genki and the Syndicate, there were the Westside Rollers and the Brotherhood. Enjoy classic Saints Row activities like Septic Avenger, where you spray new homes with sewage in order to devalue property."

In order to get this free game, players need just to redeem the Online Pass found in new copies of Saints Row 3 over the next 90 days, aka until February 13, 2012.

Saints Row 2 will be made available on the PlayStation Store early next week, but bear in mind that this offer is available only to PlayStation 3 owners from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

No word yet on if THQ and Sony will extend it to owners of Saints Row 3 on the PS3 from other parts of the world, like Europe or Australia, so stay tuned for more info soon enough.
