Chris Evans is Captain America in the upcoming “Captain America: The First Avenger,” a casting decision that has been as debated with fans as it’s been covered by the media. Entertainment Weekly now has the first shot of him in his superhero costume.

It was also EW that showed fans the first official still from the film back in October 2010, after they’d been teased with countless paparazzi shots taken on the set and then circulated online.

Now, fans have a chance to get a more thorough look at the costume, which EW says it’s been designed to look like an airman’s jumpsuit, complete with a winged helmet.

“As you may have see via some blurry, scanned photos today on the blogosphere, this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly includes an exclusive first look at Chris Evans in his full Captain America suit in this summer’s Captain America: The First Avenger,” EW writes in a preview issue.

“Here’s the real […] photo. If it looks strikingly different than the classic Captain America get-up – bold colors, flimsy material, a mask with weird little wings – that’s definitely by design,” the mag further says.

“The hero’s main uniform was designed to resemble a tricked-out airman’s jumpsuit, the ‘A’ on the helmet and star on the chest modest in size, the colors muted. It took Evans about 25 minutes to suit up,” says EW.

According to costume designer Anna Sheppard, Evans may insist on putting on the costume all by himself because it probably “helps him feel like a superhero.”

So far, fan reaction to the costume in the photo has been mixed: while some certainly agree that the muted colors make the costume and its wearer all the more believable, others argue that all this is tossed out the window when one considers the shield as well.

Still, one thing is certain: whether they like the costume or not, everybody is eager to see how Evans fares as Captain America.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is out in US theaters on July 22, 2011.
