Final Fantasy XIII was announced as making the transition from being a PlayStation 3 exclusive title to also appearing on the Xbox 360 at the E3 trade show last year and a lot of fans were shocked to hear the news. And after making that change and actually delaying the Western release of the game to put the finishing touches on the Microsoft home console version, Square Enix is saying that it is not actively looking to port the series to any other gaming platforms.

Yoshinori Kitase, who is the main producer working on Final Fantasy XIII, is saying that “In terms of Final Fantasy in general, the teams are really aiming for movie quality graphics and really dramatic storylines. For now, at least, consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 are the best place for this kind of cinematic experience to take place. We don't feel that it needs to transition necessarily to a handheld platform.”

Of course, this only applies to the main videogame in the long running series. Square Enix has already said that it plans to put out the Final Fantasy Agito XIII companion videogame on the PlayStation Portable and on a host of other mobile devices, although it has not confirmed a release date for it.

Another possibility for ports to various new platforms is in remaking older titles. Fans of the leading Square Enix franchise have long clamored for a remake of Final Fantasy VII, which is seen by many as the definitive experience in the series, but the developer has hinted numerous times that it's not planning one at the moment.

Although Motomu Toriyama of Square Enix is saying that “Our hope is that XIII will become as loved by fans as Final Fantasy VII is,” it would make sense to push the older games to as many other platforms as possible while also pushing XIII as the future of the series.
