Fable II was the biggest role playing game released for the Xbox 360 in 2008 and Microsoft and Lionhead are certainly looking for new ways to extend the franchise. After all, critics loved Fable II for the most part and it managed to sell no less than 2.6 million copies. These are strong signs that Fable III is already under development.

Microsoft wouldn't give up on such a successful game after just two installments, especially as Fable II managed to actually live up to the hype that Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux delivered.

Jonathan Ross, who works for the BBC, twittered from the BAFTA Game Awards that he was “asked to do voice in Fable 3,” which seemed to confirm that the game was in development at Lionhead. He later retracted his statement and Microsoft quickly jumped in to squash any rumors regarding the sequel, saying that “We have no agreement in place with Ross to work on forthcoming projects. That said, it is true that we are not yet done with Fable II. We are working on additional content for Fable II. That's all we can say for now. We will have more to share soon!” As always with Microsoft, “soon” could mean anything from “in the coming days” to “six months from now.”

Lionhead has jumped in to confirm that more DLC would be coming to Fable II. The first piece of downloadable content for the game, called Knothole Island, arrived in January for 800 Microsoft Points, which is 10 dollars in real money, and extended the game time for Fable II by several hours.

Any upcoming DLC would have to add a new area to the game and provide some new big quest branch in order to attract the players who bought the original game but have moved on to other gaming pursuits.
