Wireless SD cards make a comeback

Some of you might remember that, a while back, a start-up company called Eye-Fi has launched what everyone considered at the time to be an absolutely revolutionary product, namely an SD card with built-in wireless communication capabilities. Back at CES 2008, the company announced a partnership with memory giant Lexar, and then... it pretty much went under the radar. However, the first result of the aforementioned agreement has just been announced by the latter, in the form of a product that combines the reliability of Lexar's flash memory with the very innovative Eye-Fi wireless technology.

Dubbed "Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi Memory Card," the new storage solution from Lexar, available only in a 2 GB version (just like the original), is supposed to offer users a much simpler and convenient way of managing all their digital photos. Instead of removing the memory card from a camera, transferring it to a reader, connecting the reader, and then dragging each individual photo onto the computer, the Lexar Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi memory card allows users to take care of the data transfers without even touching the memory card slot.

In order to take advantage of the wireless features, photographers must first comply with 2 requirements: a computer with the Eye-Fi Manager software installed and an 802.11g, 802.11b or backwards-compatible 802.11n wireless home network setup. If these demands are met, the card will be ready to wirelessly download copies of any photos stored on it, automatically, as soon as it comes within range of the network.

As far as Lexar is concerned, it seems to be pretty happy with its decision of adopting the Eye-Fi technology. Thus, as Manisha Sharma, Lexar director of product marketing, notes, "Lexar is committed to delivering innovative products that enhance people’s enjoyment of digital photography. The Lexar Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi memory card not only provides our customers the reliability and quality of Lexar memory, but the opportunity to enjoy a new level of wireless convenience – free from the hassles of cables and greatly simplifies transferring photos from camera to PC."

No official statement regarding the pricing of the Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi Memory Card has been made so far, but since the original Eye-Fi SD cards retailed for around 100 US dollars, that will probably be the price point at which Lexar's version will also be available, when it arrives in stores in October.
