HTC Hero, the first mobile phone the Taiwan-based handset vendor HTC Corporation pushed to the market with the HTC Sense solution on board, is expected to receive an upgrade to Android 2.1 across Europe as soon as next month. The update was promised ever since the operating system flavor arrived on the market back in January, and it seems that the company is finally getting ready to deliver it to its users.

According to a recent article on phandroid, HTC itself announced that the update was set to arrive in June. Many HTC Hero owners, if not all of them, are quite unhappy with the fact that the update hasn't been rolled out until now, and, when contacted about its plans on the matter, the mobile-phone maker responded that the work on the software solution was in its final stages, and that following month was the lucky time frame for enthusiasts, just as previously announced.

“Hi [redacted] thanks for your email. Regarding the Hero 2.1 update: This was delayed back in March, and is currently awaiting OTA release next month. There will be two updates that you will receive. The first will be a small update early in June that prepares the Hero to be able to receive the larger, 2.1 update a couple of weeks later. When you receive the prompt for the second update, which is the actual 2.1 update, I would suggest you do it over wifi as it is over 100MB in size. best regards, [redacted]. HTC,” is what the company reportedly answered.

Reports on the Android 2.1 update started to emerge in the wild since a couple of months ago, yet there are great chances that things will prove real this time, it seems. Various HTC phones out there have already started to receive the software solution, including the HTC Hero over at Sprint, or the DROID Eris at Verizon, and the European version of HTC Hero might not be too far behind either. However, until an official announcement is made, or the actual upgrade emerges into the wild, the move is still covered in unvertainty. Keep an eye on this space for further updates on the matter.

I want to believe it...but have been burned to many times in the past 4 months.

i don't know who is responsible for the awful handling of the htc hero 2.1 update fiasco, google or htc. but android 2.2 is already being rolled out quickly and efficiently since it started making the news a little over 2 weeks ago. man did the htc hero crowd get screwed royally. the only way they can make up for this is if we automatically jump from the 2.1 update to 2.2 as well, but doubt very much this will happen.

Update on the Sprint version is a fact (I saw it on both Sprint and HTC web pages)... I'm quite sure that the update for Europe will come soon...

About 2.2, well, let's hope that the work done for 2.1 will make 2.2 available sooner...

I just got a response to the complaint I just mailed HTC. For European users, we will receive it the 1st of June…

The update will start with a small update and then ‘very soon’ we will receive the big update.

I’ll believe it when I see it, since we have been waiting for way too long.

Luckily, I managed to root my Hero, but this is definitely the last HTC I’ll buy!

Further on what Kanter says, unless HTC have me and my hero-equipped friends it would seem that they have again lied to us. Waiting patiently today for a pop-up saying "update" or similar and building up hopes like they have done... It's just as bad as telling your kids that the cat's just on holiday and will be back soon.

Bottom line is, if they don't pull their fingers out soon enough every hero owner will have rooted their heros.

Hero to Zero, so to speak for HTC here. I'd sooner let their customers know the update's dead and to stick with a hamster.

So it's the 25th of June 2010 and still not a peep.

What riles me is that it's available on other networks such as Sprint. What's the matter HTC? No love for your UK customers?

It's a real shame as it's a good handset but I'm sick of waiting and I'm getting an iPhone 4.

HTC - You had me at Hero...

...and you lost me at 1.5.

Just got my Hero back from HTC with a waarenty repair on the screen, booted it up and it was saying it needed to download a new update about 3MB in size, so maybe they have started rolling out the update in the UK ? :) btw, my handset is on vodafone and not locked to any network...

I have downloaded the first update but it was just to prepare the phone for 2.1.... still waiting for the full update!

Just change the date to the next month reboot and it will prompt to instal the update. Ridiculous but worked...
