Intego has updated its flagship security product for Mac, VirusBarrier X5. Version 10.5.9 is a free update to existing users. A single user license for VirusBarrier X5 costs €72.00. The piece of software requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or higher (Leopard) and 40MB of free hard disk space.

According to the renowned security firm, the 10.5.9 update offers Snow Leopard compatibility and addresses a number of other minor issues, being highly recommended for all Personal Antispam X5 users.

“Since 1997, Intego has made a name for itself in the Internet security and privacy market for Apple Macintosh,” the company states. “With the most complete range of security software for Mac OS X, including antivirus, firewall, backup and parental control programs, Intego has proven its ability to innovate and develop products that outperform the others.”

Intego VirusBarrier X5 not only identifies viruses, but it can also eradicate them, according to the program’s description. The piece of software is said to prevent Macs from getting infected, and is touted as “the easiest to use antivirus program for Macintosh.”

VirusBarrier X5 constantly asks the user about “suspicious” activity. Interested parties can download a 30-day free trial of the piece of software using the link below. The unregistered version allows files or volumes to be scanned for viruses, but doesn't provide the repair function (enabled only after purchase).

In related news, Intego is reporting that Snow Leopard sports a built-in antivirus that checks for malware as the user attempts to access files from a downloaded disk image. However, it has been revealed that the feature offers limited protection for now, as it merely uses a blacklist containing just two known Trojans. The malware checker looks at files downloaded via Entourage, iChat, Safari and other applications / services, while the threats are listed in a file called “XProtect.plist.”
