In tandem with the release of Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2, SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 arrives to eliminate the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on iMac (20-inch, Mid 2009), iMac (24-inch, Early 2009), and Mac mini (Early 2009). The update actually requires Mac mini users that they have EFI Firmware Update 1.2 installed.

As usual, Apple posts a summary of the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 on its Support / Downloads section, revealing that the package addresses a noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on the aforementioned Macintosh computers. This update works with iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.4 and Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2, Apple says.

Released in May, this year, the iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.4 fixes intermittent system freeze issues for iMac computers with ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics and wake-from-sleep issues in Boot Camp. On the mini side, EFI Firmware Update 1.2 improves compatibility with the latest Apple memory kits. To apply the update, users of an iMac (20-inch, Mid 2009), iMac (24-inch, Early 2009), or Mac mini (Early 2009) have two options.

1 - Use the Mac’s built-in software updater (Apple Menu -> Software Update), select the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 and hit Install. 2 - Manually download the SuperDriveFWU.dmg file, double-click to mount the disk image, double-click the resulted SuperDriveFWU.pkg package and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

For this update, Apple also asks users to note that some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from installing correctly. Users should disconnect non-essential devices and employ only an Apple keyboard and mouse before proceeding with the installation.
