Apple has added new raw camera support for Aperture and iPhoto users in the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update version 2.4. If you use either of the two photo-focused applications, the free update extends RAW file compatibility to eight additional cameras, including the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon PowerShot G10, Pentax K2000K-m, Leica M8.2, and four camera systems from the folks at Leaf, including the AFi-II 6 and Aptus-II 7. Issues related to specific cameras have also been addressed in this release. Stability is, additionally, improved, Apple says.

About Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.4

This update extends RAW file compatibility for Aperture 2 and iPhoto ’08 for the following cameras:

Canon EOS 5D Mark II;
Canon PowerShot G10;
Pentax K2000/K-m;
Leaf AFi-II 6;
Leaf AFi-II 7;
Leaf Aptus-II 6;
Leaf Aptus-II 7;
Leica M8.2.

Apple adds that the Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.4 also fixes problems related to specific cameras and overall stability. System requirements include Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later. Supported languages include Deutsch, English, Français, and Chinese.

Weighing in at approximately 4MB, Apple's Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.4 is available as a free download for Mac owners using iPhoto '08 and Aperture 2. Users can either download and install the update automatically by firing up Software Update from their Macs' Apple Menu, or access the link below to grab the standalone installer. Should they resort to the second method, users must:

1- double click the RAWCameraUpdate.dmg disk image to unpack the installer;
2- double click the RAWCameraUpdate.pkg installer package to begin installation;
3- follow the on-screen instructions by hitting continue and accepting the software license agreement;
4- click Install to start the process where files are being copied to the hard drive;
5- choose Restart to reboot the system so the update takes effect.
