Showtime is preparing to officially announce season 6 of “Dexter,” says report

Showtime is stalling the announcement of a new – the sixth – season for its hit killer series “Dexter.” With only so far to go until the season 5 finale, fans are on pins and needles whether next year will also bring more of Dexter and his never-ending problems.

Season 5 of the series telling the twisted and compelling story of a blood splatter analyst doubling as a serial killer / vigilante, played by the extremely talented Michael C. Hall, is drawing to an end, as fans must already know.

Many expected Showtime to make the announcement for season 6 as early as a couple of weeks ago, as is customary in television with shows that are this popular.

The Hollywood Reporter says that fans shouldn’t read too much in the delay: an official announcement should come in about a week or two, which means they will be getting their dose of “Dexter” for at least another 12 episodes.

“This won’t surprise anybody: Showtime is getting ready to announce a renewal for Dexter. The show just had its second highest ratings ever on Sunday night, delivering 2.5 million viewers, up 43% from the fifth season premiere,” THR reports.

“That almost certainly means the upcoming finale on Dec. 12 is going to set a new viewership record,” the report goes on to say.

If that’s not enough for a renewal, then nothing else is. However, perhaps the network will only order one more season of “Dexter” – for the time being.

“That’s not likely to happen this time, since key talent deals will need to be renegotiated before the show’s seventh season. Expect the official Dexter renewal within the next week or so,” THR explains.

To make matters even more interesting, aside from showrunner Chip Johannesson’s promise that season six would be differently paced than previous seasons, there’s also a little something from executive producer Sara Colleton (via AceShowbiz).

Colleton says the finale will be “big,” saying, “[It will ask the question,] ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if you could escape from your life?’ When you see the episode, you’ll realize what a great title it is.”
