The Star Trek universe is extremely popular with fans of all ages and nations devoted to the several series of TV shows that aired since the 1960s. Of course, such a big fan base couldn't have been left unexploited by the gaming industry, which developed quite a few games based on the Star Trek franchise.

The latest one to be launched is Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), set for a release in the fall of 2009. The game will focus on exploration, with players choosing from either the Starfleet or Klingon officer class for their own characters, and allows gamers to explore planets in search of resources or alien civilizations.

Recently, during an update released for the fans on the official website of the title, a representative of Cryptic Studios revealed some very interesting details on how the combat would take place in the game. He went on to say that tactics would play a major role in the battles, with players aiming for the weak points of opponents, while they try to protect their own weaknesses.

"Players will definitely be given full control. A large portion of starship combat in Star Trek Online is tactical – maneuvering your ship into position so you protect your vital systems as you attack your opponent's weakest side. You need to be “in control” of your ship in order for that to work well and be fun."

All in all, it definitely sounds like the game will emphasize the feeling of total control players will get, which can only reassure fans that this title will give them a very enjoyable Star Trek experience. All that's left for them to do now is wait until next fall to see what the development team at Cryptic will deliver.
