Publisher THQ, developer Obsidian and the creators of the television show South Park have confirmed that they are working on a game based upon the universe, using role playing mechanics, and now Game Informer has offered some details on how the game will play.

The game will use an animated art style close to that of the cartoon show, with some character animations introduced in order to make the gameplay smooth.

The game will be created using the engine that Obsidian also used for Dungeon Siege III, with closer attention paid to faces and to lip synchronization.

The main character, who is a newcomer to town, is fully customizable and will use a smartphone as the main way to interact with the world, tracking both how many friends he has made and the standing he has with the various rival groups vying for domination in South Park: The Game.

The character’s main aim will be to become accepted in his new home and there will be five classes to choose from: paladin, wizard, rogue, adventurer and one specifically created by Cartman to reflect his views on fantasy games.

It seems that the closest comparison for the battle system is the classic Final Fantasy games, with the player and one party member taking on up to five enemies, including girls, goths, hippies and gingers.

The writing and the humor, which Parker and Stone will handle directly, will reflect both their experiences playing games and the lore of the South Park series.

Danny Bilson, who is the senior vice president of core games at THQ, stated, “Our goal is simple: to put creative talent first. Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation. Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true.”

South Park: The Game will be released on home console and the PC during 2012.
