As predicted at the start of the extended 4th of July weekend, Disney’s “The Lone Ranger” was crushed at the box office by the long awaited animated film “Despicable Me 2,” which has Steve Carrell voicing the lead.

Not only did “Despicable” leave competition in the dust, but it actually managed to score the best 4th of July weekend ever at the North American box office, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The film had record grossing of $142 million (€110.7 million), almost double its budget.

“We knew it was going to be hugely successful,” Nikki Rocco, Universal’s president of distribution, tells EW. Rocco confirms that the film was a hit with families.

“She also points to the film’s prime summer release date and the fact that families were together for the July 4th holiday as contributing factors,” EW adds.

“Despicable Me 2” was also a hit in theaters oversees, already making $151.1 million (€117.8 million) in 38 countries.
