Lady Gaga’s latest single and music video, “Telephone,” a collaboration with Beyonce, have generated so much controversy (the vid in particular) that trying to sum it up would be futile. As it turns out, Gaga initially wrote the song for Britney Spears, who recorded a demo for it but then her label turned it down, AceShowbiz informs.

That demo has just surfaced online and, as imagined, it’s getting a lot of people into heated debates on who made it sound better. There’s no doubt that Gaga’s version has an advantage from the start because it also includes Beyonce and is, of course, in finished form, but many are those who say Britney too could have turned this into a smashing hit. Still, whether she’d been able to do what Gaga did is something one can only speculate about.

“An audio stream which has Britney Spears singing Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’ has just surfaced. While Gaga tags Beyonce Knowles to sing some verses on the hook, Britney goes solo in this version. ‘Telephone’ is a song which was co-written by Gaga for Britney’s 2008 album ‘Circus.’ However, the track didn’t make the cut to the album for some reasons and was quickly picked up by the dance queen to be included in ‘The Fame Monster’,” AceShowbiz informs.

“Producer Rodney Jerkins tweeted about the leftover song, ‘Me and Lady Gaga wrote a smash for Britney called “Telephone” the label didnt out it on the lp (circus). It should be out right now!!! Its too hot!!!’ In another occasion, Gaga said, ‘I wrote it for her a long time ago, and she just didn’t use it on her album, and it’s fine because I love the song, and it’s exciting I get to perform it now’,” the same e-zine further says of the demo.

“Telephone” was released in February this year and peaked at number 3 on Billboard Hot 300. It continues to get plenty of airplay, while the video remains one of the most popular music clips released online. It too caused quite a splash when it was premiered on Vevo, but, in the end, though controversial, it proved to be a smashing hit. Check out the video below to get an idea of how “Telephone” might have sounded had Britney Spears’ label accepted it for inclusion on “Circus.”
