Developers plan to put out three very different packs in 2012

Video game developer DICE has just announced that it plans to deliver three significant downloadable content packages for its first-person shooter Battlefield 3, but a number of fans have questioned why it took the team so long to create more content for the game.

Alan Kertz, who is the core gameplay designer working on Battlefield 3, told MP1st that, “we pushed hard on BF3, and lots of developers pushed vacations, parental leave and other things for a while to ship a product they could be proud about. After that was done, it takes a while to get people back into the office and up to speed.”

The developer believes that it is “better from our perspective to wait a bit on the DLC and deliver quality content with plans to deliver different types of content for different types of players over the lifetime of BF3, rather than hurry one map out.”

Battlefield 3 is facing tough competition from the Infinity Ward-developed and Activision Blizzard-published Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which has already received significant amounts of DLC and has more on the way.

As the name implies, Close Quarters will be focused on battles which take place in small spaces and will offer both maps and weapons suited for those who want a faster and more visceral experience.

DICE also has plans for another DLC pack which will include bigger battlefields and more of a focus on vehicle action.

It seems that Battlefield 3 will be getting support for quite a long time as DICE currently has no other announced title in development and they are no longer handling multiplayer developed for the Medal of Honor series, which will get a new installment during the fall of this year.

Close Quarters will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 during early summer.
