Switzerland's Zoo Basel is now home to a baby Somali wild ass. The foal was born at this animal sanctuary nearly two months ago, on July 3.

It's mother, Yogala, gave birth to it during nighttime. The delivery went smoothly, and it did not take long for the foal to get up on its feet and start walking around its enclosure.

Zoo Borns reports that the baby ass is a male. Its name is Kali, and it spends most of its day sleeping and nursing. The foal seldom strays away from its mother, and the latter is doing a great job looking after it.

Presently, Somali wild asses are listed as a critically endangered species.

Merely 220 such herbivores live in zoos worldwide, and just a few hundreds are left to inhabit the species' natural habitats in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.

Because of this, the birth of this foal is hailed as a major achievement as far as efforts to keep the species from becoming extinct go.
