Voltage Pictures – the movie studio that’s famous not only for its movies, but also for filing lawsuits against individuals that allegedly pirate its motion pictures – is suing a user whom it accuses of illegally distributing the 2011 movie “Killer Joe.”

The profit generated by the movie hasn't been what the studio had hoped for, so now they’re trying to make some extra revenue by shaking down those who pirated “Killer Joe.”

According to TorrentFreak, the complaints filed at the Delaware District Court contain a few dozen IP addresses. The company hopes to obtain a subpoena that would allow it to order Internet service providers to hand over the identities of the individuals associated with the IPs.

Interestingly, in this case, the IPs don’t belong only to residential ISPs, but also to hosting provider Leaseweb and VPN service Spotflux.

As TorrentFreak highlights, this could be an attempt from Voltage to crush privacy. However, the more likely scenario is that the studio hasn’t bothered to check who the IPs belong to before filing the lawsuit.
