By the looks of it, a new first-person shooter will come our way, one to be focused mainly on multiplayer matches. This new FPS was not announced by some nobodies in the gaming industry, but by CPL, one of the most recognized brands in professional videogame tournaments.

CPL reveals that this upcoming game will focus on team-versus-team and one-versus-one player modes. I guess it will probably be developed mostly for competitions, but maybe it won't be a game exclusive to competitions.

"Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide," said Tom Mustaine, Director of Game Development at the CPL's new studio" declared Tom Mustaine, Director of Game Development at CPL's new studio.

Severity will use id Software technology, probably the Doom 3 engine. Id Software is responsible for most of the big shooter games out there, such as the Quake series and Wolfenstein 3D. The game will have enhanced tournament support, a spectator mode and detailed player and tournament statistics tracking. By this game, CPL wants to raise the bar for competitive multiplayer games.

As regarding the release date, no word is out yet, but Mustaine declared that he expects to begin testing Severity with members of the video-gaming community before the end of 2007.

All in all, this game seems to be perfect for fans of the first-person shooter genre. It will probably compete against Counter-Strike or even Halo and Half-Life.
