The idea of being able to view the content stored onto one's iPad, iPhone or iPod onto a widescreen HDTV is quite an exciting one, and that's also probably the reason why Japanese company Princeton came up with the PIP-HDU1 HDMI Video Converter.

As its name clearly indicates, the device from Princeton has been specifically designed in order to allow users to output video onto a HDTV in a very fast and easy manner, without having to go though a docking solution in order to do so.

The PIP-HDU1 converter sports a 30-pin connector that, as you might have guessed already, connects to the bottom side of one's iPhone or iPod, as well as a mini-HDMI port, used for connecting a specific cable to the TV Set.

However, don't expect Full HD grade resolution from this thing because, as Princeton informs us, the actual resolution values will depend strictly on the content being played.

Given the fact that it actually attaches to the Apple handset, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the device from Princeton is actually quite slim and easy to carry around, measuring just around 58.5 x 50.0 x 9.0 mm and weighing something in the vicinity of 19 grams.

However, the converter does have a major shortcoming, as far as we're concerned, namely the fact that it requires an external AC adapter in order to operate, which clearly conditions its use by the presence of a power outlet.

The Princeton PIP-HDU1 HDMI converted is set to go on sale across Japan at some point over the course of March 2011 and will sell for around 6,980 Japanese Yen (roughly 85 US dollars), which is actually quite an OK price point, especially taking into account the fact that the sales package also includes a HDMI Type A to HDMI mini cable measuring 1.8 meters, as well as an AC adapter on the side.
