As much as it's been criticized and had even diehard fans worried, “The Amazing Spider-Man” proved a hit with audiences in the US and abroad. As such, Sony has confirmed that the franchise is actually a trilogy.

That the rebooted “Spider-Man” was never meant to be just a standalone film was known from the start: in August 2011, almost one year ahead of the release, Sony announced the release date for the sequel.

Talk about confidence.

Be that as it may, but it looks like the movie studio chose to play it safe in announcing the third installment as well, waiting until the film came out in the US and box office numbers came in to break the news.

“It's finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents,” a post on the official Facebook page reads (emphasis ours).

So there it is, confirmation that the Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone-starring film now out in theaters is actually the first of the three.

The second will be coming out in May 2014, to kick off the summer of that year, as we also informed you some time ago.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” was positioned worse than it could be hoped for with the July 3 release date, because it was framed by two huge superhero films that both had a loyal and strong fanbase: “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”

The new Spidey, on the other hand, was getting off on the wrong foot because it had a relative newcomer as lead (Andrew Garfield) and, most importantly, it was perceived as a totally unnecessary – and therefore unwanted – reboot.

Being released in July as the final installment of Batman was considered a bad omen. It turns out it wasn't.
