A concept device coming from an Alcatel senior designer

Today’s smartphones are becoming increasingly appealing in terms of hardware and functionality, though they tend to converge to a similar touch, candybar design.

Smartphones running under Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system are no strangers to this, especially with the stock Start Screen resulting in them an increased resemblance between them.

However, the future might bring some changes in the matter, and mobile phone makers could choose to adopt new, innovative form factors for their devices, so as to be able to make a better difference on the market.

It remains to be seen when or whether this will indeed happen, but we can already start dreaming of what a handset of the future might look like, and the Concept Unicorn from Behance should help.

The concept phone comes from Jet Ong and was based on the idea of packing an Alcatel One Touch Windows Phone device with a flip cover that would not only protect it, but would also add some enhancements to it.

Jet Ong is a senior designer with Alcatel, WPCentral notes, and his concept phone sports a 12MP camera packed on the flip cover, along with a USB port and the battery.

In fact, the cover has been imagined as housing all the internal circuitry of the device, with no hardware packed beneath the screen.

The cover can be flipped all the way to the handset’ back, which would make it fit for use in a variety of situations, and not only as a protection for the screen.

However, even with the cover bent to the back, the phone would still be super-slim at merely 8mm thick, further increasing its appeal, as can be seen in the video embedded below.

The handset could easily be built with a leather skin on the back, and a variety of textures and colors could be applied to it, promising increased customization capabilities, a feature that many users are very fond of.

For the time being, however, this is only a concept device, and it might never make it to the market in this form.
