On Wednesday, Clearwire Corporation, a leading provider of wireless broadband services, announced its financial results for the first quarter of the ongoing year. Along with unveiling the addition of 283,000 net new subscribers during the time frame, the company also announced that it planned on releasing two mobile phones during 2010, one coming from HTC, while the other being manufactured by Samsung.

Here's what Clearwire stated about its future plans on the wireless services area: “[t]he Company also expects to launch two WiMAX smartphones by the end of 2010. From Samsung, an Android-based 3G/4G/WiFi device optimized for heavy video and video communications use, and a 3G/4G/WiFi enabled phone from HTC.”

Considering the fact that Sprint is about to start selling its first handset that sports WiMAX connectivity on board, it makes sense that Clearwire is also making a move in this area. The company already announced plans to expand the availability of its 4G services to more markets during the ongoing year, and the release of 4G smartphones will certainly lure customers.

For what it's worth, it still remains to be seen when exactly the new handsets arrive at Clearwire, as well as what operating system they will run under. Both are said to be smartphones, and they might be both powered by Google's Android operating system, given the near availability of another Android-based handset with WiMAX connectivity, the HTC EVO 4G. However, this remains in the speculation area for the time being, as no specific details on the matter were unveiled.

As for Clearwire's financial results, we should mention that the company ended the quarter with revenues of $106.7 million, marking a 72 percent increase when compared to the same time frame a year ago, and a 33growth over the fourth quarter of 2009. According to the company, “the first quarter 2010 net loss attributable to Clearwire was ($94.1) million, or ($0.47) per basic share.”
