China Unicom and Motorola have just announced the immediate availability of the XT390 affordable Android smartphone in China.

According to the carrier, this is the first international brand smartphone to be priced in the 1,000 yuan (160 USD or 120 EUR) range outright.

Design-wise, Motorola XT390 strongly resembles the MOTOLUXE, but at a smaller scale. For example, Motorola MOTOLUXE sports a large 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen display, while the XT390 comes with a much smaller 3.5-inch capacitive multitouch display.

It’s also about 1mm thicker than the Motorola MOTOLUXE which is only 9.9mm thin. However, the Motorola XT390 will probably be very popular in China due to the low price and the dual-SIM/ dual standby functionality.

Members of the post-90s generation have had technology at their fingertips since they were born. They demand devices that look great and perform flawlessly for both work and play, without draining their bank accounts. At Motorola, we understand this and we designed Motorola XT390 so they can have it all,” said Frank Meng, corporate vice president, president of Motorola Mobility, Greater China.

Software-wise, the smartphone runs Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system integrated with MotoSwitch UI. The latter is actively learning users’ habits in order to put the most frequently used apps and contacts only a click away.

On the inside, Motorola XT390 is equipped with a single-core processor clocked at 800 MHz and packs 512 MB of RAM. There’s no confirmation yet, but the smartphone might also pack microSD card slot for memory expansion. There’s also a 3-megapixel rear photo snapper and support for China Unicom’s 3G network.

China Unicom will continue to launch international brand WO 3G thousand yuan smartphones to accelerate the popularization of 3G and mobile Internet,” concluded Youmeng Zhou, general manager, Sales Department of China Unicom.
