With a brand new album to promote, Cheryl Cole has just premiered the official video for her upcoming single, “The Flood,” scheduled for release for January 3. The video shows a softer, moodier side of the singer.

As the Daily Mail reports, Cheryl chose to have the single out to fans a bit later than initially scheduled in order to allow for some time to pass between two releases with the same name: Take That also have a single called “The Flood” out.

However, the video has already been premiered on British television and initial reaction to it is very good, even though she doesn’t dance or show too much of her tiny, toned body.

The video sees the star pining for her lost love as she sings, broken-hearted, about how “You can’t hold onto water” while strolling on the beach, tossing in her bed and weeping by a window.

“After a tough year for the singer, it seems she has decided to show her more vulnerable side with a moody new video for her new single The Flood,” the Mail notes.

The moody, very well-made video will undoubtedly boost sales for the new album, “Messy Little Raindrops.” Not that it would need it, since it went straight to number 1, despite the fact that many critics thrashed it.

“In a change of pace from the upbeat Promise This – which was accompanied by a video of Cheryl doing ballet – this time she is alone in a remote house overlooking a stormy ocean,” the Mail says.

“The lyrics suggest Cheryl’s love has drowned in a shipwreck and she is forever haunted by what she could have done to save him. In one scene, a lonely Cheryl is seen tossing and turning in bed as she struggles to adjust to life without her love,” the British tab further says.

There is hope, though, in the end: as the video closes, and she’s looking at the stormy ocean, Cheryl smiles – not all is lost.
